He's National Guard and I'm USCGR; our reserve pay supplements his civilian pay. Luckily, I bank with, and have loans with, USAA and they understand. Our mortgage lender, Wells Fargo, also understands. But, the key is contacting banks, lenders, and mortgage providers/landlords in advance to formulate a plan, rather than running to them at the 11th hour in a panick. Luckily, Congress came through and we'll all get paid. I'm going to keep all of this in mind, in case it happens again, in the future, rather than hope and pray it never happens again.

Re: Fed shutdown averted… an afterthought

When the government was shut down in 1995, military personnel were still paid. No Marine would risk getting discharged nor lose their respect, dignity, and self-confidence to brutally assault a man. Besides, they are trained to defend against acts like this. When they teach me to defend myself against a man with a knife, that's important information for when you're deployed that you cannot ignore. If some random citizen ends up stabbing me with my back turned while the situation of a theft was apparent, then I shouldn't be a Marine and I'd hope to be discharged because this Marine would not know his head from his ass if he were being shot at.

Re: Is the Coast Guard developing Apple iPhone and iPad apps?

Agreed w/ the Ipad concept fore sure! There are numerous possible applications though out the coast guard to utilize this device. Everything from mission planning and risk assessment to post mission boardings and case admin. Hows the process going thus far?

Interesting that your graphic is from Seattle outward to points across the country, including OCONUS (thank you very much). As many PCS'ing members know, this year, like the previous two isn't very good for home sellership. In fact, the 2-3% per year equity most homeowners reasonably expect equates to about 20-30% inequity nowadays (if that's a fair term for it). So, if you PCS'd and bought your home 4 years ago expecting to make around 10% on the sale in 2011 (not a ad assumption), the realtors will now tell you to expect to LOSE 20-30% on top of the 10% you thought you'd get so you'll be out around 40% of the homes reasonably expected value.

At this point in the 2011 PCS you have 4 options. 1) Let the bank foreclose and take a huge hit on your credit score (and possibly your security clearance). 2) Do what they call a "short sale" which is only slightly better than a foreclosure and you have to watch what assets you have because the bank can go after them in lieu of the difference between what you owe and the sale price. 3) Pay the buyer to buy your home (please sir, may I give you $30,000 to take my home away from me...please). or 4) Risk everything on a tenant who may a) keep the home in great shape so you can sell it at a future date and all the while helping you make your mortgage payments or b) trash the place more than what they gave you for a security deposit, and be delinquent on the rent.

How's the process? Just great.

Re: Mariners: the Coast Guard has changed its Atlantic SAR boundaries! I could speak at length about workloads but I'll just say that none of the other RCC's also function wear the Sector hat like we do. So Sector San Juan picked up a larger chunk of AOR while the RCC Miam AOR is not really affected.

Re: Mariners: the Coast Guard has changed its Atlantic SAR boundaries! When they were looking to make OPCOM (see this) a reality LANT Area was to go away. As such there was no longer a need for a dedicated LANT Area controlled rescue region.

The result is what you see. The Federal Register was in place and update with the new boundaries before the official decision to scuttle OPCOM was made thus making it a reality anyway.

I suspect we'll see the return of a joint LANT/D5 Command Center one day... just not anytime soon.

Re: Mariners: the Coast Guard has changed its Atlantic SAR boundaries! I would have rather had D5 continue to work the large area and maybe they get a little extra in staffing. RCC Norfolk was/is known as the primary POC and with the prime location right next to LANT it worked. Plus like you said now D1 and D7 need to learn so new skills. Part of me wishes it was left the old way but there it will be less area for D5.
